I am currently studying Glass Art and my class has been told to come up with unconventional glass painting techniques.  I'd appreciate some suggestions. Thanks.

Take a look at some of Bob Markert's paintwork (http://216.65.1.161/~fenestra/index.php). He will be teaching a class on his unconventional painting techniques as seen in his Mother Theresa portraits in his website's gallery at the Stained Glass Association of America's 2010 Annual Summer Conference.
